I didn't have an advent calendar as a child, but I would really love to have one for Connor. I shall put this idea into the mixing pot! I am tempted to knit or crochet little decorations, but I suspect that will have the same ending as your mitten idea, heh!
I have a wall hanging of a house and it's rooms. There's a small stuffed bear with velcro on his back. Spots all around the house have velcro and at the bottom of the hanging is the description of where the bear searches for Christmas all through the house. My aunt made it for my girls when Elanor was very small and it's been a favorite since. Even now, it gets hung up and someone will make sure to move the bear to the proper place.
I also always buy them chocolate advent calendars. I know the little bits of chocolate aren't very good but they love them anyway.
Your pockets are adorable. I love working with wool felt. It's so appealing to the eye and to the touch.
