Experimenting

I'm trying to figure out how to make my sewn cuffs adjustable. Suppose, for instance, I wanted to give one as a gift? I know my wrists are small--every time I get a watch we're either taking out links or adding holes, depending on what kind of watch band it is--so I can't really go by my wrist alone. My first thought was to use an elastic loop, like I did for my daughter's, and more than one button.

I think it looks pretty cute, and it works, but as far as utility goes, I like the snaps better. Not that it's relevant to the fit, but here's a closer look...

The fabric itself has the purple starburst pattern, and I went over it with embroidery floss. Anyway, my 6yo son likes the buttons. He thinks they look nice, so they serve two purposes. (I think they look nice too.) My husband and older son like the snaps, and they both suggested just putting two snap bottoms on, so the cuff can be snapped either smaller or larger. I'll probably try that next.

But I was wondering... what do you think? Multiple buttons, multiple snaps, or something else I haven't thought of?

I like the buttons I think - more decorative than snaps, although clear snaps would not be very obvious.

You could have just one top snap and two bottom snaps. The bottom ones wouldn't show since they're against the arm and you'd only have one on the top. That way the person could just use the first or second snap as needed. I think the elastic loop looks good too.

I'm a button gal. So many color combo possibilities. And I think the elastic allows for a little more variance in size, in addition to the extra button. But I can see where the older boys might want their bling hidden. :)

Also, if you're making a bunch, you can make them in different sizes. That's where I think I'm going to have to go with my stretchy beaded ones.

So. Snaps and buttons. Now it's unanimous, we all think something different. I like the buttons as a design element, but like the snaps for security and adjustibility. But I dislike using one top and two bottoms or the other way around because then you have orphan snap bits which offends our OCDness, you know.

i like the button best although I'm trying to think how I'd put a buttoned item on my wrist without assistance....

Thanks for your opinions! I think I'm leaning towards buttons for ones I make that aren't for me, and snaps for any I made that I can try right on the wrist of whoever will be wearing it.

Bells, I have no problem buttoning it around my wrist, although I wear them on my left wrist, and I'm right-handed. It's no different from clasping a bracelet or doing a watch band with one hand.
